The tatterdemalion buildings were still smoking.
Where was the Colonel? The last contact had been over two days ago. He stayed behind to find the rest of the village families. They had gone into hiding when the Goa'uld ship arrived, and he was going to escort them back to the gate. After he'd said he was holed out near an old worshipping area, the link went dead.
The team walked through the remains of the village - now just ruins. Suddenly, they saw some movement among the stones.
They approached cautiously, but then saw it was a bunch of kids. The kids beckoned the team to come closer. It could be a Goa'uld trap, so they approached warily. However, it soon became clear, it was not a trick, but the nightmare aftermath of a massacre. The kids looked as dishevelled and decayed as the landscape, but at least these ones were alive.
Then we saw him, lying down, but still protecting two wounded kids. His hair was matted with dust, dirt and blood. He had made a makeshift bandage from some cloth, and tied it round his abdomen, but it was clear from his pale, exhausted face, that he had lost a great deal of blood, and that he was in considerable pain, not that he'd tell his team that of course.
'Hey, guys. You finally made it then!'
'Jack, what happened?'
'Oh, you know, the usual, aliens poking me full of holes, but I saved the kids. They were going to be taken as hosts. A fate really worse than death. I couldn't let that happen.
A small boy went over to Jack and hugged him in thanks. Jack turned his face away from his team. He didn't want them to see the tears that rolled down his beaten and battered face. It had been a hard fought battle, but Jack had saved this boy, somebody's son, something he had never been able to do for his own son.
